Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics)

Our experienced dental team can often save teeth affected by extensive damage and decay with endodontic therapy, more commonly referred to as root canal treatment. A damaged tooth can ultimately lead to infection of the pulp and the nerve chamber, which can cause extraordinary levels of pain and lead to an abscess in the area surrounding the tooth. If this goes untreated, the condition can lead to loss of the tooth and serious (even life-threatening) health concerns, including a much higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other problems. Root canal therapy from our skilled cosmetic dentist in Chula Vista can address these concerns and prevent the need for tooth extraction.

What are the symptoms of an infected tooth?

If your tooth is causing severe pain, problems chewing, and extreme sensitivity to heat and cold, it could be infected. Other indications of a possible infection include an abscess along the gums, a discolored appearance to the tooth, and/or inflammation and tenderness of the gums. It’s important to note that, in some cases, a tooth infection exhibits no symptoms at all. Regular dental check-ups are vital to ensure your teeth are healthy. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, please contact our practice as soon as possible. We can assist with emergency dental care services if you are in need of immediate attention.

What does the treatment involve?

Once our dentist has examined you and determined that root canal therapy is necessary, she will create a treatment plan to address the infection and strengthen the tooth. A root canal eliminates the pulp and cleans out the nerve chamber of the tooth, removing bacteria and sterilizing the nerves. A high-quality filling material is used to seal the nerve chamber, and a customized porcelain crown can then be placed on the tooth to give it greater durability, protection, and a more desirable appearance. In some cases, our dentist may need to refer patients to an endodontist for root canal therapy; however, Thompson Center for Dentistry is often able to perform comprehensive root canal procedures right here at our office.

For patients who are affected by strong levels of dental anxiety, our practice offers sedation dentistry techniques that can make your root canal treatment as relaxing as possible. If you would like more information on our endodontic dentistry options, or if you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Thompson Center for Dentistry today.
